Bucharest Jazz Festival || 1-5 July 2015

Posted 2nd July 2015

Bucharest Jazz Festival is the flagship jazz event of ARCUB. Conceived as a yearly event that takes place in the first week of July, Bucharest Jazz Festival is intended to be the major jazz event of Romania’s Capital and aims to become fully integrated in the national and European contexts. Placing a strong accent on supporting the local Romanian jazz scene, Bucharest Jazz Festival is, at the same time, a bridge for world class jazz and a platform for the latest trends in contemporary jazz. Its mission is to create a place of excellence for jazz and improvised music, while making professional tools and good practices available to musicians so as to foster an environment for future collaborations between the Romanian jazz scene and the rest of the world. The Festival functions with an invited curator, usually a leading & established jazz musician or promoter. ARCUB offers the production, logistics and principal financing for the Festival through public funding from the City of Bucharest.

ARCUB started presenting jazz concerts in the mid ’90s, as soon as it was founded as the Arts Council of the City of Bucharest. In the 2000’s, it produced an early festival under the name of Bucharest Jazzy Spring. By presenting local and international jazz musicians, Jazzy Spring became the launching pad for a series of concerts at the newly restored art deco ARCUB Hall in downtown Bucharest. In 2011 a decision was made to create a summer outdoor festival that would take place in the Enescu Square, in front of the Romanian Athenaeum. Called ARCUB Open Air — Jazz, Blues & More for its first two editions, the festival changed its name to Bucharest Jazz Festival in 2014, channeling a renewed focus on jazz performance programming and additional jazz related events as an all-encompassing artistic endeavor of the 21st century.

Founded in 1996, ARCUB stands for the Art and Culture of Bucharest and represents the cultural arm of the General Council of Bucharest. Being the only institution of its kind in Romania, its mission is to stand as a bridge between the local government and the civil society. Its various event series emphasize on cultural, social and educational goals. ARCUB features several programmes in theater, music, dance and courses in collaboration with a large pool of local and international partners. ARCUB is an organizer and co-partner for some of the most important Romanian festivals, such as B-FIT in the Street!, Shakespeare Festival, Sonoro Festival, The National Theater Festival, among the over 200 events it presents a year, with a large number being free to the public. Mainly a producer and financial sponsor, ARCUB leaves the artistic decisions in the hands of outside experts in different fields. Supporting young artists is one of ARCUB’s major goals.
