19.00-22.00: Reception and Private View of paintings by Celia Ward of animal imagery in Moldavian and Maramuresean masks, actual masks and costumes, and Oltenian carpets by Elisabeta Murgu

19.00: Violin and piano recital with Andrei Gocan (violin) and Daniel Adni (piano)

Brahms (1833-1897): Scherzo from the ‘FAE’ Sonata;

Schubert (1797-1828): Violin Sonata (Sonatina) in G Minor, D 408;

George Enescu (1881-1955): Third Violin Sonata Op 25 in A minor ‘dans la caractère populaire roumain’ (1926);

Henri Wienawski (1835-1880): Concert Polonaise Op 4.

19.00: Illustrated lecture ‘Man or Mamaliga: Masks and Masquerade in North-East Romania’ by Sarah Posey

Gabriel Hanganu will make an intervention at the end of Sarah Posey’s lecture and present an excerpt from a film, still in production, on masks and masquerades in Moldavia.

Wine and canapés will be served after the lecture.

Oltenian carpet exhibition by Elisabeta Murgu; carpet weaving demo by peasant craft-artist Maria Dinoiu; Moldavian mask-making demo by Paul Buta. Maria Dinoiu and Paul Buta will hold demonstrations of their craft at the Romanian Cultural Institute, 1 Belgrave Square, London SW1X 8PH, on 7, 8 and 9 November 2006, between 16.00-18.00. All are welcome. Admission is free. Reservations at info.london@icr.ro or call 020 7752 0134.

Afternoon visits have been arranged on 8 November 2006 to the Horniman Museum’s Study Collection Centre to view examples of the museum’s Romanian musical instruments and anthropology collections, and on 9 November 2006 to the Victoria & Albert Museum to view the Oprescu collection of Romanian embroidery and folk dress. A minibus will leave No. 1 Belgrave Square at 13.30 on 8 and 9 November 2006. Tickets: £10/afternoon visit.

All events with the exception of the visits to the Victoria & Albert, and Horniman Museum, will be held at the Romanian Cultural Institute, 1 Belgrave Square.

With the exception of craft-demonstration events, entry by tickets purchased in advance ONLY. Ticket numbers are limited to 100 for the evening events and to 10 for the afternoon visits on 8 and 9 November. Tickets will be issued on a first come first served basis.
