“Over the course of the film, Puiu scrutinises everything from neighbourliness and professional arrogance to underfunding and red tape. [...] This is a macabre and acerbic satire. Yet, it isn’t without its moments of compassion, as Puiu is as much concerned with society’s growing inability to communicate as he is with hierarchical hospital politics and the dehumanising consequences of bureaucracy” (film critic David Parkinson, on BBC Movies website).

“Ranks with the films of the Dardennes amongst the great works of cinematic humanism of our time” (Sight & Sound magazine).

“One of the few genuinely unforgettable and unique cinematic experiences of the year.” (ICA London website).

The film was awarded Cannes Festival’s Un Certain Regard-Fondation Grand Prix, in 2005. ‘The Death of Mr Lazarescu’ was presented in London in the 3rd Romanian Film Festival, organised by the Romanian Cultural Centre between 2-5 February 2006 at Curzon Mayfair.
