This ballet is presented together with ‘Apollo’ and ‘Children of Adam’. A mixed programme which combines classical tradition with modern twists as George Balanchine’s ‘Apollo’ and ‘Theme and Variations’, making its Company premiere, frame a brand new work by Alastair Marriott.

The interplay of Russian heritage and 20th century American drive are at the heart of Balanchine’s choreography. ‘Apollo’, loosely based on events surrounding the Greek god, shows Balanchine looking forward, taking classical ballet in new directions to music by Stravinsky. In contrast, ‘Theme and Variations’ looks back to his earlier Russian heritage, its setting an elegant Imperial ballroom, its music the lyrical strains of Tchaikovsky.
