Beatrice di Tenda, by Vincenzo Bellini
Nelly Miricioiu makes a welcome return to sing the title role of Beatrice. The opera had its first performance at La Fenice, Venice in March 1833 and comes between Norma (1831) and I puritani (1835). The story is set in the fifteenth century. Filippo, the Duke of Milan has married Beatrice for political and economic reasons. He becomes dissatisfied and falls in love with Agnes, a lady-in-waiting to Beatrice. Agnes loves Orombello, but he loves Beatrice. Filippo and Agnes conspire to have Beatrice accused of treason and sentenced to death, which she accepts with serenity, her sanity intact. The concert performance is in Italian.
