Janacek’s great opera Katya Kabanova demonstrates that the elemental forces of nature can indeed reflect the emotional turmoil of human drama. The return of this classic production by Trevor Nunn brings out all the intensities of the conflicting characters. The stage settings of Maria Bjornson suggest the swirling undercurrents of a story that sweeps away the characters just as the Volga ultimately engulfs Katya herself. Boris has fallen for Katya, a restless woman trapped in her claustrophobic marriage to a weak husband and dominated by a jealous mother-in-law who uses her ideas of propriety as a weapon of control.
