The Romanian soprano Nelly Miricioiu will appear as Lady Macbeth in the Chelsea Opera Group production of Giuseppe Verdi’s ‘Macbeth.
Verdi’s tenth opera was of special significance to him, as it was his first Shakespeare subject and he took particular trouble over its very successful first performances in Florence in 1847. He later revised the score for Paris performances in 1865, and although great music was gained, some of the power and consistency of the earlier version was lost.
The Romanian-born soprano Nelly Miricioiu is one of the most versatile artistes of our times. Her repertoire extends from the title roles in Donizetti’s ‘Maria Stuarda’, ‘Anna Bolena’, ‘Roberto Devereux’, to Puccini’s ‘Tosca’ and Verdi’s ‘La Traviata’. She has worked with some of the most prestigious conductors and directors in leading roles that include Tosca with José Carreras, Mimi in ‘La Boheme’ with Plácido Domingo, and also Violetta in ‘La Traviata’ with Franco Bonisolli and Roberto Alagna.
