This show is performed by the University of West Anglia’s School of Creative Arts. The UWE’s newly appointed Director in Residence, Donna Savery, leads a talented company of students and staff in Martin Crimp’s new translation of Ionesco’s ‘Rhinoceros’.

One of several playwrights behind the 1950s Theatre of the Absurd movement, Ionesco’s avant-garde play expresses the notion of human existence having no meaning or purpose and highlights the loss of humanitarian values to extremist causes.

Berenger, an average French citizen working for the local government, shows disinterest in the fact that rhinoceroses are on the loose; that is until he witnesses his colleagues gradually turning into rhinoceroses themselves! This production explores the timelessness and contemporary resonances of totalitarianism and debates its different manifestations from Stalin’s Russia to Guantanamo Bay.
