Winner of the Golden Bear at the Berlin Film Festival in 2013, Child’s Pose is one of the latest international successes of the New Wave Romanian Cinema. Written by Razvan Radulescu and directed by Calin Peter Netzer, this psychological drama is a compelling analysis of a dysfunctional relationship between a mother and her son with a critical observation of the socio-political context of contemporary Romania.

Cornelia (Luminița Gheorghiu), a wealthy architect has an afflicted relationship with her resentful grown up son, Barbu (Bogdan Dumitrache). When he gets involved in a fatal car accident, she uses all her skills, well-connected friends and money to save him from jail while also expecting Barbu to become once more the dependent child he was before. As the narrative unfolds, Cornelia has to come to terms with a terrible loss and a need to confront her own culpability.

Child’s Pose has won important international awards, while also being one of the most successful films in Romania in the past 15 years.

Călin Peter Netzer (b. 1975) immigrated to Germany in 1983 together with his parents. In 1994 he returns to Romania to study at The National Theatre and Film University in Bucharest. His short and feature debuts, both entitled Maria (1997 & 2003) were screened and given awards in prestigious festivals around the world. His next feature, Medal of Honor (2009)was selected for screening in more than 30 festivals and awarded the Silver Alexander and four other prizes at the Thessaloniki IFF 2009.  Child’s Pose is Netzer’s third feature film and premiered Berlin Film Festival in 2013 where it won the Golden Bear. The film had its UK premiere last year at the BFI Film Festival in London.
