Şerban Sturdza, the distinguished Romanian architect and Executive Director of Pro Patrimonio in Romania, is visiting London and will make a presentation of three of the foundation’s major projects: The 60 wooden churches in the four adjacent counties of Hunedoara, Sibiu, Vâlcea and Gorj, with particular reference to the churches of ‘Buna Vestire’ at Urși (Vâlcea County), ‘Sf. Gheorghe’ at Boz (Hunedoara County) and ‘Cuvioasa Paraschiva’ at Târnaviţa (Hunedoara County). Being classified as historic monuments, these churches need urgent consolidation and conservation works. Often their walls and ceiling are covered with natural paintings, which are slowly decaying. While only 20% of them are functional, the wooden churches represent an important element for the spiritual and cultural heritage of the communities they belong to. The School of Building crafts in Ţibăneşti, Iași County Aiming at the renewal of the building crafts, the school is primarily intended for the Ţibăneşti villagers and to anyone interested in the conservation of the Romanian cultural heritage. Situated in Petre P. Carp’s manor house, the school offers various workshops in the building crafts especially the crafts of the carpenter and joiner, the craft of the mason and the craft of the blacksmith. This renewal is taking place with the generous help of the French association ‘Les Compagnons du Devoir’. The ‘Matache’ Market Hall and the regeneration of the ‘Matache – Gara de Nord’ quarter. This is the response of Pro Patrimonio, The Order of Romanian Architects, Platform for Bucharest and Volunteer Architects Group to the brutal outdated Urban zoning Plan for the Buzeşti – Berzei – Uranus relief road, the cutting of which has caused untold destruction and loss of heritage. The response is embodied in the book ‘Who’s afraid of the Matache quarter? Principles of urban regeneration for the “Matache - Gara de Nord” quarter’ awarded at this year’s Bucharest Architecture Biennale. Places for this event are limited and RSVP is highly recommended.
