George Enescu (1881 - 1955) is Romania’s best known and world renowned composer. His house in Mihaileni (Romania), where he worked and composed, was built by his mother’s parents between 1775 and 1830 and is the expression of Romanian vernacular architecture in the first half of the 19th century.

One year ago, we started the rehabilitation of George Enescu's house, a place where the great musician grew up. As a continuous campaign to raise funds, we have succeeded to involve the local community and many generous people that helped us reach the final phase of the restoration, but this was only the beginning.

“This building, small as it is, represents more than a restoration; as Raluca Știrbăț said so well , it’s not the walls that count; it’s about a common project, and how to grow it in a direction that even the master George Enescu would have wanted.”
-Arh. Șerban Sturdza, vicepresident of Pro Patrimonio Foundation

Our project for the reactivation of the historical site is The George Enescu International Music Academy, a center of excellence for the study of classical music, with a focus on traditional architecture, crafts and visual arts.
The Academy will blend the memorial components with an educational function, as a big part of the project revolves around the local community and involving children in the area. The academy will generate a cultural and educational opportunity to an area that needs to be revitalized, near the border between Romania and Ukraine.

The priority now is to raise the funds needed to end the first phase of the project, that is the restoration of the carpentry, 3 traditional stoves, plastering, floors and the final touches. This amounts to 15.000 euro, however the budget for the creation of the academy, including furniture, a piano, amenities and the building of a concert hall, exceeds this amount, so every donation is much needed and appreciated.
The total budget to launch The George Enescu International Music Academy is 55.000 euro.

Please donate here and help us preserve an invaluable piece of history and keep the memory of Enescu alive. Through a small gesture you can receive your own mock-up Enescu’s House or become a member of Pro Patrimonio, gaining access to all its events, publications, newsletter and network.

Every donation gets us closer to our goal!

The conservation and care of the locations of Enescu's early years represent a mission and a responsibility of great importance for our European heritage. Enescu's house has the potential of becoming  a place where great scholars connect with talented young people.

The Pro Patrimonio Foundation - Romania’s National Trust - is an international non-profit organization with branches in Romania, UK and France, established in 2000. The goals of the Foundation are to save, preserve and restore architectural and cultural heritage in Romania. Pro Patrimonio lobbies for the protection of Romania’s existing cultural heritage, aiming to teach people to appreciate its value and to provide support for the restoration and re-use of historic buildings. Our projects have saved an important number of architectural monuments until now and we pride ourselves with providing examples of good practice in restoration and reactivation of cultural heritage across Romania. Please visit our website for more information on our projects.

The Enescu Music Academy will offer the rare opportunity to learn from revered musicians and internationally respected teachers, to create a community of gifted young talents from all over the world and will provide a combination of highly intensive training courses in the beautiful, picturesque Mihaileni, where the memory of Enescu is strongly connected to the rural landscape and atmosphere.
