Timişoara has been named the European Cultural Capital for 2021. The other cities shortlisted to represent Romania in the competition were Baia Mare, Bucharest, and Cluj-Napoca. Timişoara will share this status with two other European cities from Greece (TBA) and Serbia (Novi Sad).

Timişoara participated in the competition with the slogan ‘Shine your light. Light up your city.’ This concept is based on the fact that Timişoara was the first European city with electric street lighting in 1884. It also reminds us of the 1989 revolution that started here. Its citizens celebrate their pioneering past by promoting social and cultural values that also reflect the founding principles of the European Union.
