Romanian painter and singer based in London
Specialized in painting of icons on glass and other subjects; she also undertakes artwork on commission.
She performs traditional music from Eastern Europe backed by MUKKA band.
Today she is one of the leading Romanian folk singers in Britain, working with several different bands including Dunav, Mukka and the Joe Townshead band.
Dana began singing as a guest singer with Dunav, a Balkan music band, in 1992. She now sings mainly with Mukka, a highly versatile band playing Eastern European, North African and Klezmer music who perform all over the country.
Reviving her singing career in London, Dana discovered that with greater experience and maturity her performances of Romanian “doina” had become stronger. “Doina” is a musical form specific to Romania where feelings of love, melancholy longing and rebellion are deeply expressed. Since last year’s Radio 1 John Peel Session, Mukka have been performing with Dana Codorean-Berciu whose high spirited and dynamic personality transmits pure passion, drawing the audience into an emotional journey with evocative “doinas” and joyful love songs. Yearning emotions of “doinas” are contrasted with moments of musical frenzy, with driving Arabic beats or the uneven rhythms of the Balkan dances.
