Siret, is the Douzelage partner town in Romania and in 1990 it had a very large orphanage which featured in the “Challenge Anneka” series. The conditions were appalling, but time has moved on and Siret is left with a psychiatric hospital with 120 patients, formerly residents of the orphanage. Considerable effort is given to the care and rehabilitation of these “young people” but it is a continuous struggle.
As part of its charitable purposes Sherborne Douzelage has developed projects in the town, in 2012 it sent 2 tons of clothing to the town and in 2013 donated £2,000 to help the hospital.
In April 2013 Douzelage helped persuade Romanian MEP Norica Nicolai to get their Health authorities to release 100,000 Euro to install heating systems in the hospital.
Sherborne Douzelage is trying to get a 9 seat minibus for use by the hospital and local youth sports teams. The plan is to drive it to Siret in April 2015, collecting young people from Douzelage towns on route. We are appealing to everyone to help raise funds for this project, every little helps.
