The Poetry Society's biennial competition for books of poetry translated from a living European language into English is now open for entries. A prize of £1000 will be awarded to the translator of the winning book, and the prize will be judged by Olivia McCannon and Clare Pollard. The prize is supported this year by the British Council.
Authors, translators, publishers and distributors are all able to submit books for consideration. The judges will choose a shortlist, announced in the autumn, and the winner will be announced before the end of the year. Poems from all the shortlisted books will be widely distributed by The Poetry Society to help extend the books' audience and find new readers.
Previous winners include Alice Oswald, Judith Wilkinson, David Constantine and Francis Jones. The first winner, in 1983, was Tony Harrison.

How to enter
The prize will be awarded to the translator of a volume of poetry translated from a living European language (i.e. one that is currently still being spoken) into English.
The book must have been published by a UK or Irish publisher and/or the translator of the work should be a UK or Irish citizen or permanently resident in the UK or Ireland at the time of publication. The book must have been published between 1 July 2013 and 30 June 2015, and the closing date for entries is 31 July 2015. Please read all the rules before submitting your entry.

Formerly the European Poetry Translation Prize (1983-1997) the Prize was relaunched in 2003, and renamed in memory of the young Romanian translator Corneliu M Popescu, who died in an earthquake in 1977, aged 19. Popescu translated the work of one of Romania’s leading poets, Mihai Eminescu, into English. The Prize’s founding sponsor was Romanian journalist, author and democracy campaigner Ion Ratiu. The prize, awarded to a translator, was supported by The Ratiu Foundation from 2003 to 2011. It is supported in 2015 by the British Council.
