EXPLORATIONS IN ROMANIAN MUSIC

This year at the Romanian Cultural Centre in London we’re preparing a truly special Christmas celebration. We have invited the talented pianist Sam Watts to present an evening of Romanian music, both traditional and contemporary, as our gift to our supporters and dear friends. The evening will include Romanian music old and new with some live soundtracks to animations of Gopo as well as performances by Alex Roth, Dan Oates, Matt Herd, Monooka, Nick Roth, Sam Watts and Tom McCredie. Adding to this, we will be serving tasty Romanian Christmas goodies from Deli Twist and delicious wine.
Sam Watts (pianist & composer) graduated with distinction from the Royal Academy of Music in 2013 and has been performing across the UK and internationally. His own music draws on a diverse range of musical styles and influences, from jazz to tango, Brazilian music, classical music and ragtime, with a big cinematic influence as well.
Alex Roth (guitarist and composer) is drawing inspiration from dance, film, literature and visual art as well as a wide range of musical traditions, Alex works across the jazz, improv, contemporary classical, alternative folk and electronic music communities with some of the leading artists of his generation.
Dan Oates (violonist) first attended the Royal Academy of Music as a 9 year old. His love of all musical forms soon lead him towards jazz and by his teens he was not only performing in a classical context but was also appearing with jazz bands at various jazz clubs around the South East of England.
Matt Herd (saxophonist)
Originally hailing from Glasgow Matthew obtained a degree in Applied Music from the University of Strathclyde before going on to study jazz at the Royal Academy of Music. He can be regularly seen working with a number of projects and has played at many of the UK’s most renowned venues. Matthew’s primary focus is leading his own ensemble ‘Seafarers’ who released their debut E.P in 2013 for free online download.
Monooka (singer, songwriter and puppeteer) aka Monica Madas is a London-based Romanian artist. Her music blends in Ottoman and Greek rhythms along soulful Jewish melody, fiery Romanian traditional and Gypsy music, performed with refreshing spontaneity, free improvisation, and anecdotes from life in Romania.
Nick Roth (saxophonist, composer, producer and educator) is artistic director of the Yurodny Ensemble and a founding member of the Water Project. Nick is also a director at Diatribe Records, Ireland’s leading independent record label for new music. For 2014 he is Artist-in-Residence at the Centre Culturel Irlandais, Paris.
Throughout this year we have collaborated with many gifted artists, performers, researchers, writers and directors who made our work very exciting and rewarding. Of course, this all happened with the kind encouragement we received from our friends who kept on coming to our events in support of Romanian culture. We have come a long way together, and this year we are celebrating 20 years of activities, which we hope have brought Romania and Romanian culture closer to your hearts. Thank you for making RCC a more lively place, where people come together to celebrate diversity in a multicultural Britain.
